Hair Transplant

The matter developed in the nineties, and the size of the biopsies began to become smaller until the FUT hair transplant method appeared. This method involves transferring hair units in their natural distribution, where each unit contains one, two, three, or rarely four or five hairs, then they are transferred from the back of the head to the receiving area. This method is the most successful method that is practiced by most hair specialists around the world and gives natural-looking results as we avoid the appearance of clumps of hair similar to doll hair in this method. The details of this method are as follows:

After evaluating the patient's condition and making sure that his condition is suitable for transplantation and that he is free of contraindications to surgery, such as increased blood flow, poor wound healing, or severe diseases that affect the liver, kidneys, or heart, the details of the operation are explained to the patient and his approval for the operation is obtained. The operation is performed under local anesthesia and does not require hospitalization, but it takes 8–10 hours, depending on the needs of the situation and the area to be transplanted. First, a local anesthetic is performed for the back of the head (the donor area), and then a slice of skin is taken, the width of which often does not exceed one centimeter, and its length varies according to the case, and then this area is closed with special threads that are removed after a week of the operation.

After that, this skin slice (segment) is transferred to a cooled liquid and is cut into thin pieces, and then each hair unit is separated by itself, and this may contain one, two, or three hairs, and rarely four or five hairs. Meanwhile, the specialist anesthetizes the receiving area in the same way mentioned in the donor area, after which holes are made to insert the hairs inside, and these holes are made in certain directions and distances governed by precise technical considerations. Furthermore, this implantation procedure

  • Thus, the transplantation process is over, and then a bandage with antibacterial paint is placed on both areas (the donor and the recipient). The patient attends the evening following the clinic to do shampooing, especially so that the newly transplanted hair does not fall out, and the patient is warned to take a sufficient amount of rest and not make a great effort, especially in the first week after planting, so that the transplanted hairs do not come out of their places. It is worth noting that the process of hair transplantation in this way is a common method in the world, but it consumes a lot of effort, time, and money.
  • The transplantation method usually consists of the doctor, in addition to four to five trained technicians, separating the hairs from each other under magnifying lenses, as well as the process of inserting the hairs into the holes designated for them in the receiving area, which requires a lot of patience, skill and focus at the same time.
  • Hair transplantation is one of the most successful cosmetic surgeries, knowing that it has simple and rare complications and can be treated easily. One of the most important complications is some pain after the operation, and it can be overcome with sedative medications, especially on the first day.

Baldness and hair transplantation

There are hundreds of treatments used for baldness, but in fact, the scientifically approved drug methods do not exceed the three methods that we will review in this article, giving more details about hair transplantation.

Ways to treat baldness

First method

Topical treatment with minoxidil It is a liquid that is placed on the affected area in the form of a spray or drops and helps in the growth of hair. It has been used daily for at least six months. It gives good results, especially in beginner cases, and primarily prevents further loss and encourages the growth of existing hair. But its main problem is that its results are temporary, so we find that when the patient stops using the treatment after three months, the hair begins to fall out and the situation returns to the way it was after about six months. One of the side effects of this treatment is irritation and itching, especially with the use of a high concentration of this medicine.

The second method is

The first is to use finasteride, which is the same drug used to treat prostate enlargement in men, but we use only one-fifth of the dose here. It is forbidden to give this medicine to women who are at risk of getting pregnant because it causes side effects on the fetus. This medicine is taken orally in the form of pills daily for at least six months. It helps with hair growth and stops hair fall. One of its rare side effects is its effect on the marital relationships of men. As previously mentioned in the first method, this medicine is effective, but it has a temporary effect that disappears after stopping the use of the medicine for several months.

Third method

It is hair transplantation, which means the transfer of hair follicles from the back of the head to the bald area in the foreground. This is the only method that gives permanent results. After the success of the operation and hair growth in the bald area, hair grows naturally after three to six months and continues to grow. It can be cut and shaved without being affected. Scientific research has revealed that the hair at the back of the head is not subject to baldness, and when transferred to the front of the head, it retains the same characteristics and does not fall out.

This method has been used for several decades, but it has gone through stages of development and qualitative shifts. It began in the seventies AD by the way of large circular biopsies, where circular pieces of the back of the head, 3 or 4 millimeters in size, are transferred from the back area and holes of appropriate size are made in the front of the head to install these biopsies, which contain many hair follicles. Although this method is easy and fast, its results were not satisfactory due to the appearance of circular (hair-free) scars in the donor area, which is the back of the head, as well as the appearance of hair in the transplanted (receiving) area in the form of lumps similar to doll hair.

Remove the hair extensions

There is a new method that appeared only a few years ago and it is called the method of harvesting or extracting hair units (FUE). It is a method that takes a very long time in which the doctor takes each unit separately from the donor area using a very small circular scalpel (approximately 1 millimeter) and then it is transferred to the receiving area. This method is characterized by the absence of surgical sutures in the donor area, as is the case in the normal method. Hair can also be obtained from places other than the back of the head, such as excess hair on the chest, for example.

But its biggest drawback is the increase in the material cost and the increase in the time spent in the process of obtaining only a limited number of hairs available for transplantation so that the extraction process does not take a long time. For all the reasons mentioned, this method has not been as popular as the previous method (the method of hair transplantation), and in conclusion, the choice between these methods to stimulate or replace hair remains a joint decision between the patient and the doctor after giving a full explanation of the merits of the case and the available treatment methods.
